Big names from industry and government form the Sustainability Star jury for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

Members of the Sustainability Star Jury, which chooses sustainability award recipients at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, were recruited according to specific criteria, Vancouver Organizing Committee (VANOC) media rep Paula Weber told Suite101. The criteria were:

  • An expressed interest in the position
  • Breadth and depth of expertise and knowledge of sustainable technology and innovation
  • Leadership experience in developing and delivering a successful sustainability program
  • Availability to attend, at own expense, up to seven three-hour meetings either in Vancouver or via conference call.

"Jury members whose organization applies for stars abstain from voting," said Weber.

John Beveridge, Acting Director, Environment Canada

Now director of Environment Canada’s Sustainability Division, John worked for Industry Canada helping Canadian companies develop, commercialize and market environmental technologies

Elisa Campbell, Executive Director, UBC Design Centre for Sustainability

Architect Elisa has specialized in green buildings, infrastructure, and communities for the past 15 years before becoming a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) accredited. She has applied her expertise in urban design and digital design to developed digital methods for measuring the sustainability performance of community design.

Johanne Gélinas, Deloitte Partner

Gélinas leads Deloitte’s Montreal Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability Practice. "With more than 20 years’ of public sector experience, Johanne as conducted assessments on the effectiveness of policies, programs and plans and contributed to the development of public policy on a wide range of environmental and sustainable development topics"

Ross Gentleman, Executive Director, Tradeworks

Currently, Ross is the executive director of Tradeworks, a non-profit organization that fosters sustainable independence by providing job-related skills training, counseling, and work opportunities to Vancouver residents in need of work. The products use reclaimed and pine beetle wood as well as environment-friendly stains.

Russ Jones Business Development Director, RONA

"In his role as Business Development Director of RONA’s Olympic Programs, Russ has played a key part in the RONA Vancouver 2010 Fabrication Shop collaboration. The Fab Shop is both a building site for supplies needed for the 2010 Games and a classroom for individuals without the resources to learn trade skills. Graduates have the opportunity to complete the first of a four year Red Seal certification in carpentry."

Len Jordan, Director, Venue Operations and Planning, Coca-Cola

The Coca-Cola Olympic Project Team under Len's leadership is committed to a reduced carbon footprint for Games venue operations. Coca-Cola innovations include:

  • reduced and reusable packaging at the 2010 Winter Olympics venues and villages
  • recycled containers used in the production of merchandising items and team uniforms

Michael Vance, General Manager, Resort Municipality of Whistler

General Manager of Policy and Program Development and the Whistler 2020 team at the Resort Municipality of Whistler, Michael has led the team to awards in "sustainable community planning, innovation, liveable communities, green cities and smart growth."

Nichola Wade, Executive Director, Carbon Neutral Operations, Climate Action Secretariat, Province of British Columbia

The Secretariat is another Vancouver 2010 Government Partner. Heading a team working on meeting provincial greenhouse gas emission reduction targets, Nicola focuses on climate action – "carbon neutral operations, transportation and energy policy, research and strategic partnerships". Those partnerships include First Nations, governments, industries, environmental organizations and the scientific community.

Accounting firm Deloitte, Hardware chain RONA, and Coca-Cola are Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics Corporate Sponsors. Environment Canada and the Municipality of Whistler are Vancouver 2010 Government Partners.

In addition to the above business and government jury members, there are two ex officio VANOC jurists:

Ann Duffy, Corporate Sustainability Officer

As Corporate Sustainability Officer for the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games (VANOC), Anne oversees VANOC's sustainability plan which includes "accountability, environmental stewardship, social inclusion, Aboriginal participation, economic benefits, and sport for sustainability living"

Ruth Legg, Sustainability Administrator

A Liberal Arts and Communications major at Simon Fraser, Ruth has been working with VANOC on projects including: sustainability reporting, methodology assurance, the Global Reporting Initiative, stakeholder engagement, Games-time planning, a sustainability video, social inclusion and the Sustainability Star program
