» Feature Writer Robert Dailey - Trips and RV Rentals

Hi Barry,
We do love to travel. We've got two daughters still at home (one 16 and one 12), and I have been thinking of renting an RV next summer (or maybe even holiday season) and taking a trip with the four of us.
I have several questions:
1. Would you advocate someone renting an RV?
2. Are my daughters going to be happy traveling and sleeping in an RV? I'm afraid they will miss the amenities of motels etc. and we will have a rebellion on our hands.
3. Besides the rentals and costs of overnighting at campgrounds, what other costs should I watch for? I understand that they don't get many miles to the gallon, so I suppose gasoline would be the other major expense.
Thanks for any help.

what amenities are they used to? RVs have a ton of those and it might be a good replacement. I mean, they can have privacy, make food and eat, watch movies, stretch out and nap, yap on the phone...all while you drive.

Also many campgrounds have amenities - my niece always begs us to find campgrounds with pools, for example, and common rooms often have pool tables, hot tubs, hiking trails, video game machines, boxed games, cable, libraries and more socialness than you'll see at a hotel. More and more campgrounds have WIFI, and so teens can IM all day if they like.

Barry,
Thanks a lot. The more I think about it, the more it seems like a good idea. There is an RV rental place down the road, and I think I'll give it a look.

I would keep in mind that in hotels, you are often confined to a room (and unless it's a luxury hotel or you're lucky, it won't be all that much bigger than an RV!). A nice campground and RV park basically trades in a few square feet of a hotel room, and maybe a pool, for usually several acres of hiking, pools, outdoor activities, social events, etc. depending on the place. I have priced it out, and I'm not sure it's really any cheaper than modest to midrange hotels when you add in the rental cost and extra gas and RV park fees.. but it still might be a nice choice in your situation. Also, I've found I meet loads more people when camping than I ever do at hotels.

1. When you stay at a motel you pretty much must eat out every meal or eat snack foods as a meal. add thoes expences in to your formula.
2. You still have to travel from one place to another so your gas expences, depending upon your vehicle, are still there.
3. you have to haull all your stuff in and out of the motel every night, with an RV it's already for you.
4. With your RV you can stop and smell the roses and enjoy an area that perhaps dosen't have a motel near.
5. You can spend some nights not in a campground, say in the woods somewhere perhaps near a stream. you can do that for free and let the kids explore nature.
6. Why woul sleeping in an RV be any different than sleeping in a motel? That being said after a night or two in the RV it's your bed every night in a motel it's a different bed.
7. Traveling in an RV is very much different than moteling it.You will have the opertunity to meet many different people in your RV as RV'ers tend to be very outgoing people. Make some new friends, and when you do meet them ask where they are going and where they have been...you just might want to see what they saw. In a motel you just came from another motel.
9. With your RV you can take much more of your own stuff with you and actually plan meals and other outings with out trying to do that around eating out as you do with motels.
10 Take a chance and do I say you will enjoy it.....Your girls now will probably never admit to having a good time.....till they meet that boy in the camper next door....
One more thing........stop back by and let us know what you decided and after the trip let us know what kind of RV you will be buying.....LOL
