Employment Season Is Upon US!

Seek Jobs & Get your Resumes In Early

© Barry Houseknecht

Now is the time to do that job search and get your resume out. The sooner the better, avoid the rush.

If you are a workamper employment time is upon us. If you intend to work this summer season now it the time to get those resumes in the mail.

If you have a particular establishment where you want to work. Target it and get your application in early and don’t forget the follow up letter. If you are near the place you want to work give them a visit. Let your desires be known and ask if you can interview for the position.

Because we are mobile there are a couple of options in the way you can do a job search. First is pick a location and submit resumes to any and all employers in the chosen area. The other is to choose several employers and let the destination be the surprise. The latter is the way we have had the best luck. If you don’t care where you go the options are much greater.

The number of resumes arriving at any given employer will increase as the number of employment adds increase. The number of employment ads will be increasing as the season approaches and you can become lost in the paper shuffle. You have to figure that after reviewing many resumes the employer will become hardened to what he sees.

Most resumes appear pretty much the same. We are told to write a resume in a particular manner, therefore it will look just like the last and the next that your target will see. Consider doing something different with your resume. Make your resume into something that the prospective employer will remember, use different print, maybe colored ink or make it a pamphlet with pictures and references.

Don’t get discouraged if you don’t get an immediate response. There are a lot of employers out there that just don’t respond to a resume in a timely manor or some at all.

Don’t be shy submit several resume at one time shotgun them as they say. Don’t just send one and wait for the reply…. You will grow old and never find that job.

Barry, you have opened up a whole new avenue of ideas for me! It may take a few years to get organized ;-) but I love the sound of the mobile lifestyle.

I'm wondering, Barry, if you have a particular type of workamping that you enjoy head and shoulders above the rest. I remember enjoying an artcle you wrote last Spring about workamping at a pumpkin patch. :)

The mobile lifestyle is great we wanted to do it for 5 years. Now that has passed we are opting for another 5. You need to be very flexable and try to think outside the box to earn money while on the road. As more and more baby boomers hit the road the compition is going to be greater.

Right now we are outsjde the normal realm of workamping. We are sitting on construction site as sort of security. It is very confining but we hope it will allow us more freedom when we are not working. The campground thing just dosent seem to work for us.
